Of course, you could just kick back and relax in the 10 acres that surround the mill - take a leisurely stroll, bask in the sun in the south-facing garden, with the river gently trickling by, but if you want to get out and about, the nearest village is Lhomme which boasts 2 bar/restaurants, a bakers, butchers, grocery shop and hairdressers. There is also a wine museum where you can get a introduction to our local wines.
A selection of restaurants, boutiques, and bars is to be found in La Chartre sur le Loir including the Hotel de France which used to be the base for the Aston Martin racing team for the Le Mans 24 hr race. Le Mans 24 hour race is famous throughout the world, but did you know there is also a 24 hour bike race; a 24 hour karting race; as well as motorbikes and lorries!
The main 24 hour race is usually the middle weekend of June and there is also a Classic Car Race every other year. We are just 35 minutes from the racetrack at Le Mans, so whether you are attending an event or visiting their superb motor museum we are very well placed.
The old plantagenet city of Le Mans is well worth a visit, as is the Cathedral and the Abbey. During the months of July and August there is a spectacular evening light and laser show around the old city.
A 35 minute drive in the opposite direction brings you to Tours on the banks of the Loire. Here you will find upmarket shopping areas, local and regional open markets and some stunning architecture.
The major Chateaux on the Loire are about an hour away by car - our favourites are Villandry with it's stunning gardens, Chenonceau which spans the river and Ussée which is said to have been the inspiration behind the fairytale Sleeping Beauty. Other more local Chateaux within half an hours drive are Le Lude, Courtanvaux and Poncé.
For the kids there are Zoos at La Fleche and also just north of Le Mans - Pescheray. Various activity parks are within an easy drive and they will love the beach on the lake at nearby Marcon, with it's water slide, onsite café (during peak summer season), picnic area and play equipment.
If you are a keen walker there are some beautiful local walks along the valley where you can take in the stunning scenery or follow one of the many "wine walks". Alternatively we are just 10 minutes from the Forest of Bercé where there is even a visitor centre and a choice of routes on foot or bike.
Fishing is another very popular activity in the area. Our Mill is on a Category 1 water (with native brown trout, rainbow trout and many other species) which can be fished between March and September, but you also have the Loir river 5 minutes away and lake fishing at both La Chartre and Marcon. We have put together a dedicated fishing break, where we can show you the best places to fish.
Other activities include: archery, sailing, horse-riding, golf, canoeing. There is a recently built indoor and outdoor swimming complex just 15 minutes away in Chateau du Loir and an outdoor pool at La Chartre sur le Loir.
