Get Out and About

Of course, you could just kick back and relax in the 10 acres that surround the Le Moulin de St Blaise – take a leisurely stroll, bask in the sun in our south-facing garden, and dip your toes in the gentle cool water of the river. But if you want to get out and about, then there’s lots to see and do. The only problem you will have is finding the time to fit everything in!

The nearest village is Lhomme, about 15 minutes walk from Le Moulin. It boasts 2 bars/restaurants, a boulangerie, butchers, grocers and hairdressers. There is also a wine museum where you can get an introduction to our local wines. Running directly through the village is the ‘Route de Vignobles’ (the Old Wine route). You can walk, drive or cycle the route. Stop for tastings along the way, and shop for the local wines, Jasnieres and Coteaux du Loir (both AOC). Our nearest winemaker is actually located in Chahaignes.

Le Chartre sur le Loir

There is a great choice of restaurants, boutiques, and bars in the nearby town of La Chartre sur le Loir. One of it’s most famous landmarks is the Hotel de France. This was once the headquarters for the Le Man racing teams, including the victorious Aston Martin team. And the actor Steve McQueen stayed at the hotel when he was preparing for the cult 1971 movie, ‘Le Mans’.

Le Mans

The Le Mans 24 hour race is famous throughout the world, but did you know there is also a 24 hour cycling race, and karting race? As well as motorbikes and lorries! The main 24 hour race usually takes place on the middle weekend of June. And there is also a Classic Car Race every other year. We are just 35 minutes from the racetrack at Le Mans. So if you are attending a racing event, or visiting their superb motor museum, then we are in the ideal location.

The Plantagenet city of Le Mans is worth a visit too, as are the city’s Cathedral and Abbey. During July and August there is a spectacular evening light and laser show – La Nuit des Chimeres. It attracts thousands of visitors to the city. So if you are planning to get out and about in Le Mans, it’s definitely not to be missed.

Tours

A 35 minute drive in the opposite direction brings you to Tours on the banks of the Loire river. In Tours you will find more upmarket shopping areas, local and regional open markets, and some stunning architecture.

Les Chateaux de la Loire

The major Chateaux of the Loire are about an hour away by car – our favourites are Villandry with it’s stunning gardens and Chenonceau which spans the river. We mustn’t forget Ussée. It is said to have been the inspiration behind the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. Other more local Chateaux within half an hour’s drive are Le Lude, Courtanvaux and Poncé.

Something for everyone

For the kids there are Zoos at La Fleche, and also just north of Le Mans at Pescheray.

Various activity parks are within easy reach of Le Moulin de St Blaise, and they will love the beach on the lake at nearby Marcon. With a water slide, onsite café, picnic area and play equipment, there’s lot to keep them entertained while you just chill out.

Wide range of activities

If you are a keen walker, then there are some beautiful local walks along the valley. Get out and about just to take in the stunning scenery. Or follow one of the many ‘wine walks’. Alternatively, we are just 10 minutes from the Forest of Bercé, where there is a visitor centre and a choice of routes on foot or bike.

Fishing is another very popular activity in the area. Our mill is on a Category 1 stretch of water, with native brown trout, rainbow trout and many other species. The waters can be fished between March and September. The Loir river is 5 minutes away, and there’s lake fishing at both La Chartre and Marcon.

Other activities close by include archery, sailing, horse-riding, golf, and canoeing. There is even an indoor and outdoor swimming complex just 15 minutes away in Chateau du Loir. And another outdoor pool at La Chartre sur le Loir. Opening times for the outdoor pools will depend on the season.

Anything else?

This is just a small selection of a wide range of activities and locations near Moulin St Blaise. We make a great base for exploring, sight-seeing, having fun or just chilling out. In fact, there are so many things to see and do here, you will struggle to fit everything in. Which means you will just have to come and stay with us again, year after year.
